Anniversary Day @ Lake Chelan

It was December 30th 2017. For the rest of the world it is Christmas season and also a day before the year ends. But for me it is a very special day. We were celebrating our second wedding anniversary!. So soon the time flew.

Just like everyone we too were planning for a special destination for the special day. But our plans were dropping one by one as we were checking the flight tickets. We realized that our anniversary day is a very expensive day for travelling. No matter what, I wanted to celebrate the day by travelling  somewhere where I can  have a great time with my husband and enjoy the momentous day. I really do not know when I actually turned into a travel freak!. Be it a holiday or any weekends I just did not want to stay inside the home. Finally we decided to go to Lake Chelan. We also got to know from our friend about one of the main attraction that is  'The Lady of the Lake', a ferry ride between Chelan and Stehekin city. 



It was just a 3 hours drive for us and we were at Lake Chelan in the afternoon. Even though we had been here two times before, it was totally different from the previous visits. The mountains that once looked colorful had now a blanket of snow spread over them. The lake welcomed us rolling out the carpet of snow throughout the shore. I love when it snows - it is like someone from the sky is showering on you with beautiful white flowers. And its very compelling to see the post-effect of snowing. There will be snow everywhere you see - on the road and on the car, over the trees, over the roof and over the huge mountains. It seems like the Earth has turned into Heaven!.

We had booked a room in 'GrandView on the Lake' hotel and luckily ours was lake facing. We had a beautiful view of the lake and mountains from our room. This made my day. We were just watching the lake from afternoon until it got dark. The more we looked the more alluring it was. The lake looked gorgeous even in the dark. Huge mountains, a lake and stars shining in the sky - what a lovely night it was!.

Next day we got ready for 'The Lady of the Lake' ferry ride and the schedule was 10 am - 4 pm. It takes two and half hours to reach Stehekin and there are two stops on the way before getting there. There are no roads and this place is accessible only by a boat or a plane. As the boat sailed in between the snow covered mountains we felt as if we were entering the paradise. Wherever we turned we could only see the shining white mountains. We were stunned looking at this splendid view of the nature.

We reached Stehekin at 12.30 pm. The next ferry to go back to Chelan was at 1.30, so we had one hour to spend there.

We could not go anywhere as there was snow everywhere and also we had no much time. We took the 1.30 ferry and we were back to Chelan at around 5 pm. 

This trip had really made our special day very very special!

Finally we were going to Crater Lake, a dream come true moment for us because we were planning to go to Crater Lake from the beginning of the last year but due to some or the other reasons we could not accomplish it. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the USA, about 1950 feet deep and perhaps the most pristine on the earth.  It is about 350 miles from our place (Redmond, Washington), so we decided to begin the trip on Friday evening and return by Monday early morning. Hiking the Ape Caves

When we say hiking, the picture that comes to our mind is hiking in the forest, in the mountains or in the hill areas. But what if you are hiking inside a large cave where it is pitch dark that means complete absence of natural light and bunch of surprises awaiting for you as you walk in the trail because you will not be knowing where and how the trail ahead goes. Its somewhat unusual right!. Ape caves in Washington will give us similar kind of experience. Ape cave was formed about 2000 years ago when Mount St. Helens erupted. It is 13,042 ft long and is the third longest lava tube in North America. It is located at Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington. We did a little bit of research in the internet to find out how difficult the trek will be. We got to know that there are 2 caves: Upper and lower with lower cave being the easier one and upper cave being the difficult one. Crater Lake Travel in Winter

It was Thanksgiving Day.  As Indians we do not celebrate Thanksgiving but yes we were eagerly waiting for this day because we have two days holiday and it is a long weekend!!!. So, we planned to go for a long drive in our three weeks old new car!. The destination we decided was one of the beautiful place -  Crater Lake.  Our plan was to go to Painted hills in Bend on the first day, second day to Crater Lake and finally drive back home via Portland on third day.  Without knowing this plan would turn into one of the most adventurous trip, we started on Thursday early morning all excited!. We crossed freeway I405 South, drove to I90 East, from there took Route 82 and then Route 97 where the road conditions were good. From 97 we had to take the internal road Route 206 where the roads were some what snowy and were not cleaned.
